Veteran fighter Charles Radtke learned a valuable lesson on Saturday night at UFC 315 in Montreal. If you’re gonna talk smack on Canada before fighting a Canadian in Canada, you’d better be able to back it up. And Radtke was very much unable to back it up in his fight against Mike Malott.
In the lead-up to the fight, Radtke claimed that he would make Malott pay for Canadians who booed the American national anthem at the NHL 4 Nations Face-Off in February.
“I don’t give a sh– about hockey,” Radtke said. “That’s not my gig. But what I do hold dear is I grew up on a bison ranch with my grandfather, who’s a Sergeant Major in the Marine Corps, and when you all booed the national anthem, somebody’s going to have to pay for that. Somebody had said, ‘Oh, well you booed them the week after.’ Doesn’t make it right.”
As you can imagine, Canadians did not take kindly to that. Radtke was roundly booed at weigh-ins and then peppered with chants of “f— you, Radtke” during his fight with Malott. But things only got worse from there.

In the second round of his fight with Malott, Radkte walked straight into a huge left hook that sent him tumbling to the mat. Malott then followed up with several clean strikes to a flattened Radtke before the referee rushed in to stop the fight.

In his post-fight interview, Malott said that it was important for him to defend the hono(u)r of his country, but urged fans to stop booing Radtke.
“Don’t boo him. We’re celebrating now. No negativity, only positivity,” he said. “When it comes to defending this country in the octagon, know one thing Canada, I stand on guard for thee.”
What an awesome moment for Malott and an extremely teachable moment for Radtke.
