One of the greatest events in the world took place last weekend in Gloucestershire, England: the annual Cooper’s Hill Cheese-Rolling and Wake. A German YouTuber named Tom Kopke won the event for the second year in a row.

For the uninitiated, the annual Cooper’s Hill Cheese Roll is a dangerous competition where people break bones and smack their heads on the regular. Competitors start at the top of the steep 600-foot hill and chase a wheel of Gloucester cheese down. Whoever gets to the bottom first wins the cheese.

You have to be a legitimate mad man to compete in this event and that’s precisely why I have always wanted to give it a go myself. Check out this year’s Cheese Roll action with a full replay here and a recap with commentary below:

Tom Kopke won the men’s competition for the second year in a row. It’s incredible that he was able to pull this feat off without dying in the process. Afterward, Kopke said “all the people at the top said they were going to steal my title but this is mine.” He added “I risked my life for this. It’s my cheese. Back to back.”

This second video provides a great rundown of the action:

In the women’s division, 20-year-old Ava Sender Logan won. It was her first time competing in the Cooper’s Hill Cheese Roll and she would later say that she doesn’t even like cheese… Blasphemy. Who doesn’t like cheese?!

The annual Cooper’s Hill Cheese Roll always brings drama. Like in 2023, the winner of the women’s competition was knocked unconscious as she was crossing the finish line. So she managed to win and still get KO’d at the exact same time.

I’d truly love to see this competition adopted here in America. Tell me this wouldn’t be perfect in Appalachia?!
