Very few songs had a chokehold on society like ‘Sleepyhead‘ by Passion Pit in the summer of 2009. It continues to be one of the greatest electropop tracks of all-time and it recently received new life with the help of Sofi Tukker.
Worlds collided in Dallas over the weekend when the Sofi Tukker got Michael Angelakos on the phone right in the middle of their set, just moments before the drop.
Sofi Tukker, for those who may not know, is not one single person. The electronic dance music duo consists of Sophie Hawley-Weld and Tucker Halpern, who combined their names (with a twist) to create their name. They are best known for their songs ‘Drinkee,’ ‘Best Friend,’ and ‘Purple Hat.’
Passion Pit formed in 2007 in Cambridge, Massachussetts. The band often looks different when out on the road but Angelakos is the primary recording member as the frontman and keyboardist. Its debut album dropped in 2009 but the world was already captivated by ‘Sleepyhead’ off of the first EP.
It is not uncommon for EDM/house DJs to play and/or remix a version of ‘Sleepyhead’ during live sets. Especially during the early 2010s. The track went two times platinum. Everybody of all ages can get down to the Passion Pit smash hit, from your little brother and sister to your grandma and grandpa. They may not know the name but they’ve heard it and they love it!
Passion Pit currently holds residencies at Deluxx Fluxx in New York and Brighton Music Hall in Boston. They, really just Michael Angelakos, have released a few new albums over the last decade but none of them hit quite as hard as ‘Sleepyhead’ or ‘Take a Walk.’ Both songs live on!
Sofi Tukker recently joined forces with Angelakos to put a fresh twist on a classic.
It bangs.
Sofi Tukker recently performed their remix of ‘Sleepyhead’ at a show in Dallas. Tucker thought it would be funny to FaceTime Angelakos in the middle of the song to see if he would pick up. He did!
Sophie brought the phone to the camera so the entire crowd could see him on the big screen. They all went absolutely bonkers together for the drop.
I love to imagine that Angelakos was out for a walk when he got a call from one of his friends with no idea what to expect. Why not answer?! Much to his surprise, it was not a random logistical question. Sofi Tukker was playing his (their) song at a sold-out show.
They are helping to keep his legacy alive and I’m sure he loves that it still gets play. Sleepyhead will never die!
